As challenging as the actual reading was for him, one of the biggest challenges he was having was that the books that were at his reading level were BORING to him. I love Henry and Mudge and Frog and Toad, but... most ten-year-olds don't.
So I started writing this book. And I gave him a chapter a day to read. The chapters were printed on regular paper in a large font. Short sentences, short chapters. Easy to read. I asked him to give me feedback. He loved it!
When the book was finished, I gave it to my second grade class. I didn't tell the students that I was the author. I wanted to watch their unbiased reactions. All the kids were laughing. All the kids loved it. And most importantly: all the kids were reading. Even the kids who "hated" reading.
Fast forward a few years and I connected with Ky Betts. His drawings are so whimsical and... nutty! I knew he was the perfect Illustrator for My Nutty Family. Today the first drafts of the illustrations are finished and I am SO excited to announce that the book will be published by Three Gems Publishing at the beginning of the 2016-2017 school year.
What I love most about this book is that it gets reluctant and/or struggling readers reading. If you have a reader like that at home and would be interested in buying a pre-publication copy of My Nutty Family for your child to read like the fourth grader I mentioned above, email me. There will only be 50 copies of these pre-publication books. $25 covers a signed copy of a rough draft of the book and a signed copy of the book when it's released in the fall.
And if you haven't already read the first part of the book or entered the contest to get your (or your child's!) chance to participate in the details of the book, be sure to check out the My Nutty Family page on this website.
